HandMade Hats

Hats have always had an iconic presence in the fashion system as a timeless lifestyle icon.

With functional and aesthetic purpose, they have become a must-have accessory.

SUPERDUPER and SCHOLA launch the ‘Hat Factory’ a unique place where a new, contemporary generation of hat makers will be able to grow their skills and dive into this world with a new conception of the modern artisan job.

Students will live a unique and inspirational learning experience with one of the most renowned contemporary hat brands.

They will learn how to hand-make and design several and different kinds of hats, with different shapes, styles and workmanships, will study how to manage different materials and trims, following both tradition and current trends, always combining love and care for the detail with a modern, creative and sustainable approach.

The course is divided in 2 modules, the Apprentice Level (7 weeks long) and the Artigiano Level (17 weeks long, including the Apprentice Level).

The 7-week long basic module is a first introduction to the art of making a hat. Students will learn how to design and make blocked hats with a focus on both straw and felt.

They will be introduced to the concept of blocked hats and will work with basic materials that are suitable for beginners, such as wool and light rabbit felt, simple straws, and elementary trims.

During the second 10-week long module, students will improve their skills and expand their knowledge, by learning how to manage more special and difficult materials on blocked hats, how to enrich the product with more sophisticated trims, and how to create “cut and sewn” hats, with a focus on baseball, bucket hats and flat caps.

At the end of the course students will be able to develop their own final project in our laboratories for 3 additional weeks under the guidance of our Maestros.

Next intake will start on February 8th, 2022.

SUPERDUPER

Founded in Florence in 2011, SUPERDUPER grew out of a period of creative experimentation and a strong desire to make. This opened us up to a new territory waiting to be re-discovered – the world of hats.

Within two years, the company was gaining industry recognition for our fresh take on an artisanal heritage. In 2013, the brand won the Who is on Next? Award in the Men’s category, with a special mention in the Women’s category. Today, SUPERDUPER has matured into a global brand that can be found around the world.

From their creative studio and workshop at Manifattura Tabacchi, SUPERDUPER challenges the standard operating model of fashion e-commerce. The signature method allows them to make all online purchases to order, reducing waste and excess inventory while maintaining the highest quality. The internal production means  that they can make a hat in 72 hours, transforming the finest raw materials in the hands of a team of young artisans.

SUPERDUPER put care and attention at the heart of everything they do, so that  hats, and  business, are made to last. That’s they we stitch an earthpiece™ onto every hat: to mark it as a unique, handmade piece, to connect us to the Earth and to remind us to give back to nature. And by training the next generation in age-old crafts, the brand commit to leaving behind tomorrow’s legacy today.

Super Duper TRAINING COURSE IS PART OF SCHOLA, A NETWORK OF SCHOOLS FOR BESPOKE CREATORS in Florence

SUPERDUPER’s training program aims to empower students to pursue their ambition of becoming hat craftsmen by developing both their skills and vision.

The course is for individuals seeking to develop or extend their practice and skills in the heart of Made in Italy.

Given the nature of the discipline, the course will rely on skilled practitioners as the key facilitators of learning.

Some workshop activities will require students to work in groups, also from other courses, in scenarios that will involve multiple cultures and nationalities.

The course combines practical hands-on training with the theoretical study of subjects related to hats and more general ones like history of fashion, branding, production and sustainability.

The final project of each student will be the common thread of the course and will lead the students to acquire the skills and the knowledge to put their ideas into practice.

Students will be encouraged to think and develop the essential elements of their own design identity. Design will have a key role in the learning process along with branding and management skills, which are all essential to develop a personal path in this industry. Students will start here to build their future as makers, entrepreneurs or successful employees all over the world.

Our purpose is to build a vast network of contemporary and independent-thinking hatters who are able to change the world with their hands, by developing a conscious relationship between intelligence of the hands and contemporary culture, along with the importance of environmental and social sustainability. Our goal is to become a worldwide hub for craftsmanship training.
